Lignin-containing Nanocellulose Films and Coatings for Value-added and Sustainable Packaging Applications (CGA5.3)

Market forces have dictated a growing number of substantial advances in packaging technology leading to greater innovation at numerous levels to satisfy end-customer needs. In light of the emerging trends in nanocellulose-based packaging efforts, a study was conducted to develop lignin-containing cellulose nanofibrils (L-CNF) films and coatings to provide a sustainable barrier packaging. Fundamental characterizations were made of various L-CNF with respect to their morphologies, crystallinities, compositional analyses, and charges. Barrier properties of various L-CNF-coated linerboard and films were also compared.

This presentation discusses the study's approach and findings which  highlight lignin-containing CNF as a viable means to improve desired packaging properties.

Cupstock Coated with Multilayer WBBC's Process & Product Performance (CGA6.1)

The pursuit of an alternative to extruded poly barriers on paperboard cup stock has become a high-interest topic within the packaging industry in recent years. To investigate the impact of multilayer barrier dispersion coating technology on cup stock, we studied the performance of commercially available dispersion coatings applied on existing cup stock base which today is utilized for extrusion of PE to produce hot and cold cups. Multilayer coatings provide an efficient solution in achieving improved barrier properties while maintaining a low coat weight which is advantageous from a sustainability perspective as both materials and energy usage can be reduced.

This presentation discusses the approach used for the study as well as highlights the results which determined that coating dispersions can be processed to perform at a desired level for the intended application using the multilayer coating concept.
