Douglas W. Coffin, Ph.D.
Dr. Douglas Coffin earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Delaware in 1994 with a focus on mechanics of composite materials. From 1989-1994, he was a structural engineer with the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics in Groton, Connecticut. He was on the faculty of the Institute of Paper Science and Technology in Atlanta, Georgia from 1994-2002 and joined Miami University in 2002. In 1999 Dr. Coffin spent a year-long sabbatical at the Swedish Pulp and Paper Research Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. He has extensive experience in the mechanics of paper materials and has worked with many of the leading researchers in the field.
Dr. Coffin was awarded the Van den Akker Prize in Paper Physics in 2001, and the TAPPI Corrugated Division Award and Bettendorf Prize in 2011. He is an active researcher, conducting funded projects ranging from tissue papers to corrugated board and working on multi-scale problems ranging from nano-fibers to converted boxes. He is a TAPPI member and a past chairman of the International Paper Physics Committee.
